Yes. Both buttons can be active at the same time without generating conflicts. Each one operates independently and appears in a different location within Outlook.
Where each button appears
- Native Outlook button (Microsoft integration): appears in the main Outlook menu, in the ribbon under the Home tab.
- SMARTFENSE button (Report Phishing add-in): appears in the Apps or Add-ins section of the ribbon, visible once the email is open.
Both are visible simultaneously in both the Outlook desktop client and the web version.
What happens if the user clicks both?
Each button works independently. If a user uses both on the same email, both actions are recorded in the platform:
- In the campaign detail, both user actions appear in the history. The user table reflects the last recorded action.
- In the audit log, both reports are visible individually.
In practice, it is not common for a user to use both buttons on the same email. However, if it does happen, the platform handles it correctly without any loss of information.
Configuration: is anything different needed for coexistence?
No special configuration is required for coexistence. Corporate domain validation is single and works for both buttons. The configuration defined in the platform applies regardless of which button the user uses to report.

💡 Best Practices
- Let users know which button they are expected to use to report suspicious emails, to avoid duplicate actions that could make metric analysis harder.
- If both buttons are active, review the false positives configuration under Settings > Security > False positives to make sure Microsoft's automatic analyses are not counted as user actions.
- If there is any doubt about which report came from which button, check the campaign audit log, where both actions are recorded individually.
