This article explains how to use the User profile setting to lock end user profile fields, so that users can view them but not modify them.
What is this setting for?
By default, end users can edit their profile data from the platform. In organizations where user data comes from an external source — for example an import or a synchronization with the corporate directory — it is advisable to prevent users from modifying it, to avoid inconsistencies with the source system.
From User profile you select which fields become read only for end users.
Where to configure it
- Log in to the SMARTFENSE Management Portal.
- Go to Settings > Security > User profile.
Available fields
The screen shows the fields a user can edit from their profile:
- Name
- Lastname
- Language
- Phone
- Profile picture
The field corresponding to the email cannot be edited by any user from their profile. It is not listed because it is always read only.
How to lock a field
- In Settings > Security > User profile, select the checkbox for each field that should not be editable.
- Leave unchecked the fields the user will be able to modify.
- Click Save.
The selected fields remain visible to the user in their profile, but cannot be modified.
Where end users see their profile
End users access their data from the user environment:
- Click the user name in the top right corner.
- Select My Profile.
There the user views their profile fields. Fields locked from User profile are displayed but cannot be modified.
A checked box means "not editable". This is the reverse of the usual logic: you select the fields you want to lock, not the ones you want to enable.
How to undo the lock
- Go back to Settings > Security > User profile.
- Clear the checkboxes for the fields you want to make editable again.
- Click Save.
💡 Best practices
- Lock Name and Lastname when users are imported or synchronized from a corporate directory, so that platform data always matches the source.
- Keep the Language field editable if the organization has users in different languages, so each one can adjust their preference without administrator intervention. Note that users can only choose among the languages active in the instance, defined in Settings > Organization > Languages.
- Review this setting after implementing a new integration or user import.
- Inform the internal support team which fields are locked, so they can respond to users who cannot edit their data.
- Verify the result from a test end user profile after saving the changes.
