This article describes the configuration sections available under Settings > Engagement > Gamification. From these sections, administrators can adjust which gamification elements are displayed to users, which actions award experience points and badges, and how achievements are notified.
Components
The Components section allows you to choose which gamification elements are displayed on the end user's Dashboard.
The available components are:
- Experience points and levels
- Badges
Each component can be enabled or disabled independently.
Important: This configuration modifies what the user sees, but does not disable Gamification. For example, if Experience points and levels are hidden, users will still accumulate points and the information can be viewed from the platform's administrative console.

Badges
The Badges section displays the list of badges available on the platform.
Badges are automatically awarded when the user completes the required action to earn them. The actions that count toward badge acquisition depend on the configuration set in the Interactions section.
Each badge includes:
- A name
- A description
- An image
- The action by which it is awarded
- The experience points it grants
- The status (active or inactive)
To disable a badge:
- Select the badge in the table.
- Click the Activate / Deactivate button.
The badge will no longer be awarded to users while it is disabled.
To manually grant a badge:
- Go to Users and groups > Users.
- Select the relevant user(s).
- Click the Grant Badge button.
When a badge is awarded, the user receives an on-screen notification and can view it in their earned badges list on the Dashboard, below their avatar.
Administrators can view the badges received by a user from Audit > Users > Overview, by selecting the relevant user.
Experience points
The Experience points section is informational. It displays the list of actions that award experience points and the number of points assigned to each one.
Points are automatically credited to the user at the moment the action is performed. The actions that count toward point accumulation depend on the configuration set in the Interactions section.
Completed contents
The Setting up completed content section allows you to define whether content that a user has already completed will award experience points and count toward badge acquisition when the user completes it again proactively.
The available options are:
- Reassign Experience Points and count the action for the delivery of new Badges: each time the user completes previously finished content, they will be awarded experience points, and the action will be considered for awarding new badges if applicable.
- Do not reassign Experience Points and do not count the action for the delivery of new Badges: completed content will not contribute to the accumulation of experience points or progress toward new badges, regardless of how many times the same content is completed.
Important: This setting only applies to content that the user can view in the Completed Content section of their Dashboard. If the user has already finished the content, but it is reassigned to them through a campaign, this setting no longer applies: they will be awarded experience points and the action will count toward new badges if applicable.

Ranking
The Ranking settings section allows you to select whether administrative users should be included or excluded from the Experience Points and Badges Ranking.
These rankings can be found in the Experience Points Ranking and Badges Ranking sections, and also on the end-user Dashboard.
The available options are:
- Show administrative users in the ranking: administrative users appear alongside other users in the ranking, showing their progress in points and badges.
- Do not show administrative users in the ranking: administrative users are not displayed in the ranking, but they continue to accumulate points and badges normally.
To save changes, click Save.
Interactions
The Interactions to obtain experience points and badges section allows you to select which types of actions award experience points and count toward badge acquisition.
By default, all actions that the user can perform are considered. The options that can be enabled or disabled independently are:
- Interactions with real campaigns: the user receives experience points for actions performed within the real campaigns they were assigned to. These actions also count toward badge acquisition.
- Interactions with test campaigns: the user receives experience points for actions performed within the test campaigns they were assigned to. These actions also count toward badge acquisition.
- Interactions with content proactively: the user receives experience points and counts toward badge acquisition when interacting proactively with available campaigns and content, outside the context of an assigned campaign.

Notifications
The Configuration of new badge notifications section allows you to decide whether users will receive a message when they earn a new badge, and through which channel.
The message informs users of the name, description, image, and experience points of the earned badge.
Regardless of what is configured in this section, users will always see an on-screen notification when they earn a new badge and will be able to find it in their earned badges list.
Sending notification
Allows you to enable or disable the notification:
- Send notification
- Do not send notification
Delivery method and content
If notifications are enabled, you can choose the delivery channel and customize the content:
- Send SMARTFENSE's own notification by email: sends the platform's standard notification by email.
- Send customized notification by email: allows you to customize the email content. The administrator can configure the message for each language available on the platform.
- Send SMARTFENSE's own notification via Slack
- Send SMARTFENSE notification via Microsoft Teams
To verify how users will receive the notification, click Send me test.

💡 Best practices
- Review the Interactions settings before launching the gamification program, as they determine which actions count toward points and badges across all other sections.
- Disable Interactions with test campaigns in production environments to prevent internal testing from inflating user rankings.
- Define the Completed contents policy at the start of the program: changing it later may cause inconsistencies in user progress.
- Exclude administrative users from the Ranking if they participate in test campaigns, so their interactions do not distort the end-user ranking.
- Use Send me test in Notifications before enabling sending, to verify that the message is delivered correctly through the configured channel.
- Keep badge notifications enabled: they reinforce the connection between the action performed and the recognition, which improves user engagement.
